What is the history and popularity of the app?

Peter Gabriel is a musician and digital pioneer. Along with physicist and software entrepreneur Martin Hopkins, Peter worked on a solution to the overwhelming infinite choices that are offered by the Internet. Eden Ventures, a venture capital specialist, joined the two men and The Filter was formed in 2004.

What are the differences to other apps?

The Filter offers applications for individuals as well as businesses. By specializing in video, gaming, and music content, they can provide effective options for optimizing entertainment systems for digital content companies. By analyzing data, Filter Systems provides recommendations for businesses to help enhance targeted advertising, study traffic data, monitor trends, generate playlists, and more.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

If a user does not choose to download The Filter Plug-In to aid in recommendations, the site provides a search tool for music or movies. Interestingly, the search tool could not locate any of the artists entered during the review, including site founder Peter Gabriel or any of the top ten BillBoard artists. Even after exploring the site to confirm that they were on the site, they did not show up when searching to choose feed settings.

Installation of The Filter Plug-In requires users to locate the desired music library for use in recommendations. Once installed, the program catalogues the music. Unfortunately, there are no step-by-step instructions for moving beyond this point.

After the users’ music library is imported, the next steps are not intuitive. The Filter did not provide recommendations or information on how to add to the Taste Cloud that is supposed to allow users to rate content. The interface is not user-friendly and needs a detailed FAQ section for new users.

How does the registration process work?

An active email address, password, screen name, and first and last names are required. Users are then offered the option of importing files from or Flixster. Account personalization with a photo, an option to invite friends, and a downloadable plug-in to help generate appropriate recommendations are all offered.

What does it cost to use the application?

Individuals may use The Filter without fees. Filter Systems for businesses are configured for specific business goals and costs are determined by the configuration and scale of the company’s needs.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Right now, it would seem that businesses are the main focus of The Filter. Individuals who utilize the application should prepare for some frustration as they attempt to get it up and running.
